In this section, we’ll walk you through the general steps of installing the doggie door. Depending on the doggie door you bought and your wall type, you might need to do some tweaking.

Step 1: Unpack the Box

Inside the box, you’ll find the housing unit. There will also be an instructions manual and hardware for mounting the door. There might be also a template paper that you could use to help you with measurements.

Step 2: Mark Your Wall

Begin from inside by choosing a suitable area to install the door. Make sure this spot suits the pet on both sides, the interior and exterior.

Check the wall for wires, power outlets, and pipes. After that, use the measuring tape to mark the dog’s shoulder height on the wall.

Step 3: Check the Wall for Studs

Now that you have decided on the height of your door, proceed to locate the studs on the wall using a stud finder. Once you locate your studs, use a drywall saw to cut out a hole next to the stud.

Step 4: Start Drilling

Using the template, drill through the wall and into what will be the door’s 4 corners. Using the level and a pencil, draw a line to connect the 4 holes. This is the interior hole you will cut out to form the door.

With the drywall saw cut out that rectangle around the 4 corners. Now it’s time to deal with the molding or insulation that you have in your wall.

Step 5: Fit in the Interior Side of the Door

Put the first side of the door into the wall and it should slide in smoothly. If it didn’t fit, re-measure and adjust the cutting on the wall.

Use the pencil to draw a rectangle connecting the 4 holes. Then, with the use of a proper saw, cut along the lines you just drew.  Remove the part that you cut off. However, don’t throw that part away, you might need to put it back later.

Step 7: Fit in the Exterior Pet Door

Put the exterior door inside the hole and make sure it fits properly. Some people choose to provide additional support to the door by putting pieces of wood on both sides.

Step 8: Screw the Doors

After you have made sure that both the interior and exterior doors fit well and that the door is properly supported, screw the doors into the wall. Now you have a doggie door that is fully and properly installed.
