What Human Food Can Yorkies Eat? (Solved & Explained!)

Yorkies need a curated diet consisting of protein, a moderate amount of carbs, and essential vitamins and nutrients. There are some human foods that pass this test that you can let your Yorkie try in moderation.

It’s hard to resist the beady little eyes of a Yorkie when they notice the delicious looking food on your plate. Before letting them indulge in a little taste of what you have, you want to be sure that the food is actually safe for them to eat.

Is It Better To Make My Dog Food From Human Food Or Buy Dog Food?

Naturally, loving pet parents worry about whether or not the food they choose for their pups are up to the highest standards necessary to keep them healthy for as long as possible. While your Yorkie can tolerate certain human foods, you shouldn’t rely on them for your Yorkie’s entire diet unless you are an expert in what your dog needs to be healthy.

Dog foods are formulated to ensure that your pup gets all of the essential vitamins and nutrients that they need to keep them healthy from the inside out. Human food will most likely not be sufficient enough to get their tiny little bodies the exact nutrients they need without overfeeding them.

What Meats Can Yorkies Eat?

You can consider any type of meat that your Yorkie eats in their regular dog food as something you can feed them the human version of. You just want to be very careful how you prepare the meat, and you want to be sure it’s cooked all the way through.

For example, you want to feed them cooked chicken with no bones, and boil it without adding any seasonings. That may sound really dull to us, but your Yorkie will enjoy it.

If you are going to share some pork with your Yorkie, you want to make sure there are no sauces and seasonings as well. Furthermore, you don’t want to give them a lot as it contains a lot of fat.

What Fish Can Yorkies Eat?

Salmon is also a delicious treat for your dog, as long as it’s cooked. The omega-3s are just as good for your Yorkie as they are for us.

Tuna is also rich in those essential omega-3 acids, but you want to ensure it’s cooked as well. The parasites that can live in raw fish can be very unpleasant for your Yorkie’s digestive system.

Can Yorkies Have Any Vegetables?

Many dogs enjoy the slightly sweet taste of pumpkin, and it’s a fantastic digestive aid for your Yorkie. They also have high amounts of beta-carotene, as do sweet potatoes, which helps keep your dog’s digestive tract clean and functional.

Peas and green beans, preferably cooked but cooled off slightly and without added salt or oil, are nutritious snacks to share with your pup. They are low in calories and high in vitamins and minerals, and are a decent source of plant-based protein.

Carrots are also a fantastic choice to let your Yorkie chew on. The carrot will help clean their teeth while also giving them some Vitamin A to help their bones, skin, and fur.

Can Yorkies Eat Any Fruits?

You can let your Yorkie try some finely chopped apples; just be careful to core the apple and remove the seeds before giving them a taste. Apples provide your Yorkie with a nice boost of Vitamin C and A.

Is There Anything I Can Give My Yorkie, Just In Very Small Doses?

You want to limit how much dairy you allow your Yorkie to indulge in. Dogs cannot break down the sugars in milk products very well, so keep their dairy consumption at a minimum.

Dogs are also able to eat a little bit of plain white rice, but they shouldn’t have a lot. It also isn’t recommended at all if your Yorkie has diabetes.

What Foods Should I Not Share With My Yorkie?

You shouldn’t give your Yorkie any foods that are fried, have high sugar or salt content, or are cooked in a lot of oil. You should also avoid feeding them any raw meats, fish, or eggs, as they are not easily digestible for your pup.

Are There Any Foods Considered Toxic For Yorkies?

You probably already know that chocolate or anything containing cocoa can be very toxic for your dog. You may also know that when giving your dog peanut butter, you want to ensure that it doesn’t have xylitol in it, which is toxic for dogs as well.

What Is The Best Way To Introduce New Foods To My Yorkie?

When you want your Yorkie to try a new food, give them a very small piece first. Let them sniff at it and pick it up as they choose to. If they want more, let them have a small amount more, and then don’t give them any more.

You want to be sure you start off with small amounts so you have time to see how they react to the food. They might enjoy the taste and texture but once the food starts digesting it may cause some upset.

What Are Some Signs That My Yorkie Cannot Tolerate A Certain Yorkie-Safe Food?

One telltale sign your Yorkie cannot tolerate the human food you’ve let them try is diarrhea. You want to be sure that if your Yorkie gets diarrhea, they get some fluids in them, or even some pureed pumpkin with no salt or sugar.

They might also vomit up the food, though that may be a little bit less common. Don’t let them try the food again if they vomit.

If they seem lethargic, have a lot of diarrhea or vomiting over the course of a couple days, and/or lose their appetite for their regular food afterwards, it may be worth a phone call or trip to the vet to make sure everything is okay.
