How to Map an Invisible Fence Using a Wire Detector
There are several different types of wire detectors on the market. They all act similarly. They’re able to detect the frequency that the wires give off beneath the ground. Certain detectors can only detect the wires at certain depths or distances. Here are the steps you need to take to use a wire detector in order to map an invisible fence.
Step 1. Prepare Wire Detector
There are two parts to a wire detector. The transmitter needs to be plugged into the wire that you’re trying to detect. You do this by clamping the positive node on the wire transmitter to the positive node of the wire. The positive node should be part of the invisible fence system.
The other part of the wire detector is the receiver. It receives the signal given to it by the transmitter.
Step 2. Turn to Cable Mode
Once the positive node has been clamped to the positive wire, you’ll want to turn the cable mode on the transmitter. This activates the receiver.
Step 3. Turn Volume On
Taking the receiver, you’ll want to turn the volume up to a desirable pitch.
Step 4. Start Searching
You then dangle the receiver over the areas of your yard where you suspect an invisible dog fence may be located. The receiver will start to make a noise when you come closer to the wire. It will grow in volume until you’re right on top of it.
Step 5. Mark the Area
You should then either mark the area with a flag, some plant-friendly paint, or simply plant a flower there if you don’t want to ruin your landscaping. Once you have fully marked the area, you can then take a tape measure, measure the area, and create an accurate map.
How To Map An Invisible Fence With An AM Radio
If you don’t want to shell out the money for a wire detector, then you can also use the AM radio method with a spiral plug. Follow these steps to map an invisible fence with an AM radio.
Step 1. Gather Materials
You’ll need a few tools in order to search for your wire with an AM radio. The first is a wire. Any wire will work. It needs to be able to be secured to a spark plug. You’ll also need some form of an engine with a spark plug. A lawn mower will suffice.
You’ll need an AM radio. Any kind of device should work as long as it can pick up AM radio frequencies. You may also need speakers or headphones to hear the radio better.
Step 2. Tie Wire to Spark Plug
Taking your wire, you should secure it around one of the spark plugs on the engine. It should be tight enough that it won’t fall off when you run the engine.
Step 3. Secure Wire to Hidden Wire
You’ll want to cut back the protective layer of the wire in order to get at its cables. Wrap those cables around the wire you’re trying to search for. This wire should be connected to your home in some way. You’ll want to tie it to the positive node. You should also turn off the fence to ensure feedback doesn’t occur.
Step 4. Set AM Radio Frequency
The most optimal frequency is 530. However, if you pick up a local radio station instead, then you’ll want to adjust the frequency either higher or lower. Do so until you hear only static.
Step 5. Run the Engine
Once you’re ready, you can start the engine and engage the AM radio. Walk along your property and hold the AM radio over the ground. You’ll want to hear static. The static will grow louder as you get closer. It will also end abruptly once you are directly over the wire. The change is subtle.
Step 6. Mark the Area
Every few feet, mark the wire location. You can do so with paint, flags, or with flowers. Once you’re finished, you can make the proper measurements with a tape measure and create an accurate map.
How Deep Is The Wire For An Invisible Fence Usually Buried?
The standard depth for invisible fence wires is 1-3 inches. This depth ensures that the wire can still be found with a wire detector easily. Yet it’s also deep enough to remain protected from the lawnmower and other lawn disturbances. Consider the following steps for digging your wire appropriately.
Step 1. Prepare the Area
You can cut down some of your work by pushing messes like pine needles and dirt to the side of the trench line. For areas that cross lawns, you’ll want to shave the lawn down by a few inches.
Step 2. Make Grooves
Instead of digging up the entire area, you can simply use a tool like a spade to cut a groove into the lawn. This small slit in the ground is wide and deep enough for the wire. Just make sure to measure the depth. It needs to be between 1-3 inches deep.
Step 3. Insert Wire
Then you can plant the wire along the trench that you created.
Step 4. Cover It
Finally, cover the trench and grooves. Your yard will be minimally impacted and the wire will be buried efficiently.
How to Find a Break in Your Invisible Fence
There are a few ways you can find a break in your invisible fence. The first is with the AM radio method described above. The second is with a wire detector like the Kolsol.
Step 1. Turn Off Fence
You’ll want to begin by turning off the fence.
Step 2. Plug Kolsol Transmitter to Positive Node
Taking the positive wire of the transmitter, you’ll need to clamp it to the positive node on the house box. You can also clamp it to a wire in the yard. The negative wire should be plugged into a screwdriver that’s driven into the ground.
Step 3. Walk the Area
Turn the receiver on and walk along the line of the wire. When the noise from the receiver ends or suddenly quiets, then you’ve located the break.
