Looking to help your dog exercise more and considering some indoor dog treadmill work? I was thinking the same thing and wanted to know how much does a dog treadmill weigh. Am I going to be able to get this thing up the stairs?
Dog treadmills are smaller than human treadmills. Treadmills for small to medium sized dogs (10-55 lbs) weigh 47-50 lbs. Treadmills for larger dogs (55-179 lbs) weigh 100-110 lbs. It’s possible to get them up and down stairs as long as you have two people carrying the box. Team lift!

Summary Table – Dog Treadmills And Their Weight
Types of Dog Treadmills
There are two main types of dog treadmill you can buy or build:
- Motorized – These treadmills come with electronic controls and a motor. Like a treadmill at the gym they let you set the pace electronically and keep you moving along. These weigh about 50 lbs for the small versions for small to mediums sized dogs (10 – 55 lbs). Larger versions weight 100-110 lbs for larger dogs (55 lbs and up)
- Self Propelled – These treadmills are like the old school treadmills that move when you move them. They weigh as much as the motorized version or even more. Why is that? They use wooden slats and other machinery to make them move smoothly so you don’t save as much weight. They don’t have a motor and you can’t electronically set the pace. They match the pace your dog sets via running. They required more work to get moving as there is some friction and resistance on the tread when you first get it moving. They are built either with a rolling carpet or wooden slats. The wooden slat version tends to move more smoothly and makes it easier to your dog to run fast.
- DIY – Most do it yourself models use the self-propelled function and thus weigh similar to them. These tend to be heaviest of all as they are built with solid wood pieces that are easy to pickup from Home Depot and other stores. Also, most DIY plans use carpet as the running platform. It’s hard to build a wood slat treadmill that doesn’t pinch your dog’s feet.
Will A Treadmill Weigh My Dog?
Most dog treadmills do not weight your dog. If you’re using a human treadmill that can weight you it might be able to weight your dog as well.
Based on my experience weighing my 11 lb chihuahua mix, you’ll need to treat small dogs different than large ones.
If you want your human treadmill to weigh your small dog you’ll need to weigh yourself with and without holding your dog and subtract the difference. That’s the only way I can weight Ella on a human scale.
If you’re dog is 40 lbs or great they should be fine to weight directly on a human treadmill with a weight function.
What’s The Difference Between A Human Treadmill And A Dog Treadmill?
Human treadmills are designed for runners that weight between 90 lbs and 300 lbs. This means self propelled human treadmills will be very difficult for dogs to use as they’ll need to work super hard to get them started.
Generally if you want to use a human treadmill with a dog it should be a motorized treadmill.
Can Dogs Use a Human Treadmill?
Yes, dog’s can use human treadmills that are motorized. Self propelled human treadmills require too much effort for a dog to start them moving. Yes, some larger 100 lbs dogs may be able to use a self propelled human treadmill but you’ll have more control on their workout if you let them use a motorized one.
