The Top 6 Dog Jogger Treadmills

How does each treadmill perform? Is it safe enough? Is it powerful enough for large breeds? Are there any downsides to consider? These are some of the questions that I’ll answer in each of the following reviews.

Petsite Dog Treadmill – Top Pick

After reviewing most of the treadmills on the market, I couldn’t find anything better than this treadmill from Petsite. It balances well between safety, performance, and affordability.

First things first, the running area measures about 14” by 38”. It could’ve been slightly wider, but the sturdy construction made up for this fact. Thanks to its iron pipes, this treadmill can withstand dogs weighing up to 200 lbs.

Over the sides, Petsite placed 2 sheets of 600D oxford fabric that attach to the frame with 5 pieces of velcro. Since it’s made with enough height, it can effectively block the dog’s line of sight to increase focus. And of course, you can easily remove them if your dog feels claustrophobic.

For extra convenience, this treadmill can be controlled from the attached panel in addition to a remote control.

It was amazing to learn that you can fully control the treadmill with the remote. You can increase/decrease the speed, shift between modes/presets, and pause/start the machine. There’s also a large panic button to stop the treadmill immediately if something goes wrong.

In the control panel, there’s another great safety feature. There’s a red key that has to be inserted into its slot for the machine to work. Best of all, this key can be directly attached to the dog’s leash. This way, the belt will immediately stop if the dog tripped.

The only negative aspect is in Petsite’s customer support. Several customers were disappointed when they had to wait for a bunch of days before getting a reply. To make matters worse, some didn’t even get responses!

DogPACER LF 3.1 Full-Size Treadmill – Budget Pick

In spite of their amazing potential, treadmills aren’t cheap. If you have a large breed, you might end up paying more than $1,000 to get something that fits. If that’s too much for your budget, consider this treadmill from DogPacer.

The running surface of this treadmill measures around 71” by 16.5”. And the construction is built to accommodate dogs under 180 lbs. Best of all, it’s priced at the average cost of much smaller and weaker treadmills.

Over the back, DogPacer placed 2 casters to make it easier to move this 90-pound treadmill.

The front side features a manual extending arm to adjust the incline. But since this is placed right behind the motor, you’ll have to stop the treadmill and remove the dog every time you need to adjust the angle.

The control panel is mounted at the front over a plastic arm for convenience. From there, you can easily spice up your dog’s training by selecting from the built-in programs. And of course, you can fine-tune these programs to exactly match your needs.

But surely, you can’t expect a product that’s affordable to be void of problems. After reviewing customer reviews, it became clear that durability isn’t its strong suit. Some customers reported that it broke down after about 5 months of regular use. But to be fair, other reviews were absolutely happy with the performance for more than a year.

DogTread Premium Treadmill – Best for Small Breeds

Training a Chihuahua or a Yorkshire Terrier on a gigantic treadmill might do more harm than good. The large moving belt can easily intimidate them, especially if it’s louder than usual. If you own a breed under 30 lbs, this treadmill from DogTread can be the best bet.

Since it’s meant for small breeds, DogTread designed it with safety in mind. For starters, the top surface of this treadmill is void of any holes that might trap the dog’s paws. The belt features a smooth platform without any seams or meshes that might trip or confuse dogs.

Better yet, DogTread used a state-of-the-art whisper-quiet motor. This would be especially beneficial for timid dogs who get easily scared.

Over the front, this treadmill is equipped with 2 recessed wheels. This should make it easier to move the treadmill around without having to actually carry it.

Over the back, there’s a flip-bar padded with non-slip rubber. When you fold this bar, the treadmill will assume a fixed incline. Although this incline system is convenient, it’s a bit limiting since you can’t establish a moderate incline; It’s either zero or full-degree.

The treadmill’s control panel is positioned over the front side with a slight slope to make it easier for you to operate. I only wish DogTread had put some kind of a barrier between the belt and control panel to prevent the dog from changing the settings by mistake.

DogTread Premium Small Dog Treadmill
  • LCD Console – Program Speed, Distance and Time for each workout. Red Safety Start and Stop is easy to identify. Included remote control provides additional training versatility.
  • Recessed Treat Holder – Provides a convenient way to dispense and hold treats during the initial stages of training. NOT FOR WATER, TREATS ONLY.
  • Sturdy, Attractive Dog-Friendly Design – The DogTread is equipped with a whisper-quiet motor and is free of any holes, meshes or seams where a dog might get small paws caught.
  • Natural Running Platform & Manual Incline Options – Low training fence provides a more comfortable and positive experience while the Flip-bar Incline increases training intensity as needed to simulate outdoor terrain.
  • Space-saving Portable Design – Securely rests on its nose for convenient storage. Transportation wheels makes it easy move the DogTread to any location.

Pros

  • Super safe for small breeds
  • Whisper-quiet motor
  • Can be put up against the wall when not in use

Cons

  • Limited incline
  • No barrier protecting the control panel

DogPACER Minipacer Treadmill – Another Option for Small Breeds

Since small breeds are pretty prevalent nowadays, I wanted to present another option that would suit them.

Unlike DogTread, this treadmill has its wheels at the back, leaving the incline extension at the front. You might disagree, but I preferred the DogTread’s design.

Having the inclination arm positioned right behind the motor makes it imperative to stop the treadmill and remove the dog each time you want to make an adjustment. The other design, however, can be safely altered in the midst of the training session.

In terms of sturdiness, DogPacer slightly excels. It measures around 38” by 16”, which doesn’t differ that much from the competitor. However, it can support up to 55 lbs of weight, exceeding the DogTread with about 25 lbs. The main reason behind this is the carbon steel construction featured by DogPacer. This material is well known for its sturdy properties and lightness.

Over the front, the control panel is mounted on a plastic rod. This way, you can interact with the machine without having to completely kneel. Good news for all the senior dog owners!

Furthermore, DogPacer makes training your dog easier and more convenient through the multiple fitness programs saved inside its memory. It’s shocking to learn that DogTread misses such a useful perk.

The only faulty aspect I noticed here was about the side sheets. With the DogTread, the belt was surrounded by sturdy plastic boards. DogPacer, on the contrary, uses a pretty flimsy fabric fixed to a thin plastic frame. As you can tell, this might not be strong enough to protect against any sudden hazards.

  • Larger weight capacity

  • Reasonably priced

Cons

  • The side-guards don’t provide enough protection

GoPet Petrun Pr700 Dog Treadmill – The Sturdiest

Unfortunately, most of the dog treadmills on the market are made of a bit flimsy plastic. Naturally, such construction won’t last that much. This gets especially true if you have a large, heavy breed. If you care about sturdiness, consider this treadmill from GoPet.

The PR700 features all-metal construction. The smallest parts, such as the casters and legs, are also made of robust metal. GoPet also placed metal rails on the sides of the belt to protect small dogs from falling.

The running area measures 28” by 16”. By extension, the ideal dog weight for this machine lies around 45 lbs.

In front of the belt, there’s a metal crossbar with an inlet to fix your dog’s leash. It’s a nice feature to promote safety. However, I wish the crossbar was a bit higher. Right now, dogs can easily trip on the leashes dangling in front of them.

If you prefer digital interfaces, you might want to consider another treadmill. This machine is controlled through small buttons found on the side. There’s also a remote control to adjust the speed from a distance.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t think this system is convenient enough. In most dog training programs, you’ll have to set the speed to a specific value. Without a digital screen, you’ll be left to guess the speed yourself.

Although this treadmill falls into the small category, it weighs about 80 lbs. This is pretty understandable when you consider the metallic construction. You might want to consider another product if such weight would impair handling and storage.

Go Pet Petrun Pr700 Dog Treadmill Indoor Exercise / Fitness Kit - For Dogs Upto 44 Pounds
  • For Dogs Up to 44 Pounds. Tread Running Area - 28X16.
  • Exercise Multiple Dogs. Low running platform.
  • Remote or manual control. Speed and timer control.
  • Emergency safety stop. Dog chain holder. Speed from 0.6 - 7.4 MPH.
  • Silent driving system for very quiet operation.

Pros

  • Robust all-metal construction
  • Equipped with a metal crossbar with an inlet for the dog’s leash
  • Comes with a remote control

Cons

  • Heavyweight
  • Doesn’t have a digital display

GoPet PetRun PR720F Dog Treadmill – An Honorable Mention

If you liked the PR700 but thought it was too small, you can opt for the next machine in the same series. The PR720F treadmill comes with a running area that measures 52” by 16”. It can nearly carry triple the capacity of its predecessor with a maximum of 132 lbs.

Lucky for us, GoPet used the same all-metal construction. They used metal casters and legs to provide enough support for this 150-pound machine. But unlike the PR700, the front casters are connected to an extended metal bar instead of the machine itself. Since the machine covers a bigger footprint with this design, it becomes even more durable than the previous model.

For easier storage, GoPet made it possible to fold the anterior metal bar when not in use. Now you can put the treadmill against the wall to save the biggest space possible.

My most favorite upgrade in this model is in the remote control. GoPet added a small screen to show the speed as you’re adjusting it. This can be super helpful if your dog is recovering from a particular injury that requires a specific physical therapy routine.

Last but not least, GoPet equipped this newer model with a quieter motor. This should help if your dog is naturally timid around new stuff.

GOPET PetRun PR720F Dog Treadmill Indoor Exercise/Fitness Kit
  • For Dogs Up to 132 Pounds. Tread Running Area 52 X16
  • Air cylinder Auto-Fold. Exercise Multiple Dogs
  • Low running platform. Remote or manual control
  • Speed and timer control. Emergency safety stop. Dog chain holder
  • Speed from0.6 - 7.5 MPH. Silent driving system for very quiet operation.

Pros

  • Sturdy all-metal construction
  • The casters are connected to an additional metal bar for enhanced support
  • Comes with a remote controller that features a screen

Cons

  • The machine itself doesn’t have a digital screen

What to Consider Before Getting a Dog Jogger Treadmill

Can’t decide on what to buy? This section should help you! I’ll discuss the top factors with which you can pick a treadmill that truly fits you and your dog.

Check Weight and Size Compatibility

It wouldn’t make much sense to get a treadmill that your dog can’t safely use. So, the first parameter you have to check is the maximum dog weight and size that can be supported by the machine.

Weight is pretty obvious. Your dog must way a bit less than the recommended value to avoid ruining durability.

Size is a bit trickier, though. Brands usually write the measurements of their running area. For the best results, the running area should be twice as long as your dog’s length. If your dog is bigger, he might easily fall off the treadmill.

Consider Portability

How wide is your home? Do you have enough space to leave the treadmill hanging around 24/7? If not, you’ll need to look for a treadmill that offers good portability.

For starters, the treadmill should have at least 2 wheels. This would enable you to lift one side and roll the treadmill to the desired area. Lucky for you, almost all treadmills have this feature.

Then, consider the possible storage methods. Some treadmills, like the DogTread Premium, can be left standing against the wall.

Obviously, if you’re planning to move the treadmill around a lot, you should pick one with lightweight construction.

Pick a Treadmill With Inclination

Just like humans, dogs can multiply their exercise benefits by adding an incline to the treadmill. Ideally, it’s better to get a treadmill with a motor-based inclination, just like the one featured in human treadmills. With this technology, you can easily adjust the angle back and forth while the dog is running.

However, it’s a bit rare to find such models. And even if you do, they’ll likely cost more than average.

So, that leaves you with the manual inclination. Brands notably differ in their approach toward this, but the general concept is mutual. You’ll have a flip-up arm that raises and lowers either ends of the treadmill when moved.

As you might’ve guessed, the manual design is a bit limiting in its potential. If you want to adjust the angle, you’ll have to pause the machine and remove the dog first.

Go for a Wide Speed Range

Dogs differ in their exercise needs. Young adults, for instance, love to play around and run as fast as they can. Senior dogs, on the other hand, prefer slower paces.

If you want the best bang for your buck, you should get a treadmill that can serve both purposes. A range between 0.5 mph and 8 mph is ideal for most breeds.

Furthermore, it’s crucial for speed adjustment to be in small increments, preferably 0.1 mph. This should open the potential for accurate training and physical therapy.

Get a Treadmill With a Proper Safety Switch

No matter how well a treadmill is designed, accidents are pretty inevitable. It’s true that most of these accidents won’t be that major, but it’d be obviously better if you can decrease the risk to the lowest rate possible.

For this matter, ensure that the treadmill has a safety switch before you buy it. Such a switch typically comes as a key plugged in a specified port. Once the key is pulled outside its port, the treadmill immediately stops.

In most models, this key is designed to be pulled by the owner in cases of accidents. As you can tell, this system might not be safe enough since it depends on the user’s alertness. If you’re unlucky, an accident can happen in the blink of an eye when you’re not paying attention.

To avoid such risk, it’s better to get a key with a clip attached to its end. This clip can be easily attached to a front-ring harness. If the dog loses his balance and trips, the safety clip will be pulled out immediately. You can see such a design in the Petsite treadmill that I reviewed earlier.

Can Dogs Use a Human Treadmill?

If you already own a treadmill, you might be asking yourself, what’s the point of a dog treadmill? Can’t my dog just run on your treadmill?

At first, this might seem like a perfectly normal solution. After all, a dog treadmill is built with the same technology as the humans’ machine. It’s just a belt with a motor rotating it. So technically, yes; your dog can run on your treadmill. But should he? Well, not really.

If you took a look at my featured products, you’ll realize that human treadmills lack some special parts and features that are essential for the dog’s safety and performance. In this section, I’ll explain some of these features to put things into perspective.

Human Treadmills Aren’t Safe

Safety standards differ considerably between humans and dogs. For us, we only need the treadmill to be smooth and sturdy enough to bear our weights.

Dogs, on the other hand, need something more. Their treadmills need to have side guards to protect them from tripping over the sides. If these guards were high enough, they would also limit the dog’s field of view to block distractions.

Furthermore, there has to be a sturdy crossbar to attach the dog leash into. This should help the dog keep pace, regardless of how fast the belt is. Also, the safety key on a human treadmill might not reach the dog. It should be low enough to prevent unintentional turnoffs.

Last but not least, the large gap present behind the belt in some of the human treadmills can be impeccably dangerous. If the dog trips, his little paws might get caught in such gaps.

Human Treadmills Might Be Longer Than Necessary

Generally speaking, the running area of human treadmills range between 50” and 60”. For large breeds, this size would be optimal. However, such large belts might actually expose smaller breeds to risky injuries.

The problem here is psychological more than anything. Whenever dogs run on a treadmill, they feel confused when they notice that the surroundings are standing still. As a result, they tend to stop or slow down their pace frequently.

On a small belt, they’ll gradually learn that they can’t do this since there’s not much space to lag onto.

Human Treadmills Are Louder

Dogs can be easily terrified from low rumbling sounds. That’s why most of them hate thunderstorms. I know that the treadmill sound doesn’t seem that scary, but it can actually freak out your dog.

In a human treadmill, we might not even notice the loud sound. Even if it’s noisy, you’re probably training while listening to your favorite tracks anyways.

Dog treadmills, on the contrary, are endlessly competing to produce treadmills with the lowest noise without affecting performance. DogTread is certainly among the best. Its treadmill’s motor is as quiet as faint whispering.

The Verdict

Even though they cost a lot, treadmills can be absolutely crucial for owners who can’t dedicate enough time to their dogs.

After my thorough research, I think that Petsite produces the best dog jogger treadmill. Thanks to its sturdy construction, it can support up to 200 lbs.

If you own a small bread, consider the DogTread Premium Treadmill. The thing I like the most about it is the whisper-quiet motor.

If you don’t prefer plastic treadmills, you should love the GoPet Petrun Pr700. All its parts are made of robust metal, even the legs and casters.

Remember, safety first! Never let your dog run on a human treadmill to avoid injuries.
